Is mole mapping the same as a skin check?

No. A skin check is a medical examination of your skin by a doctor, usually using dermoscopy. Mole mapping uses total body photography to create a photographic record of your skin so new or changing lesions can be compared over time. The two approaches complement each other, mole mapping does not replace a skin check.

How often should mole mapping be repeated?

There is no single interval that is right for everyone. The timing depends on your individual melanoma risk, previous history and whether particular lesions are being monitored. Some patients may have repeat photography around 12 months, while selected lesions or higher risk patients may require earlier review. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate surveillance plan.

What should I wear to my FotoFinder appointment?

Accepted Answer

Total body photography requires as much of the skin as possible to be visible, so you will usually be asked to undress to your underwear. Our team will explain the process beforehand and maintain your privacy throughout the appointment.

Does FotoFinder check every mole for cancer?

Accepted Answer

No. FotoFinder creates high quality photographs of the skin and can help identify new or changing lesions, while selected spots can be examined more closely with digital dermoscopy. It does not diagnose every mole or replace a medical skin examination, and some areas of the body may not be fully captured by total body photography.

Can AI diagnose melanoma?

Accepted Answer

No. FotoFinder's AI can assist by analysing images and highlighting areas that may warrant closer attention, but it does not replace clinical assessment or your doctor's judgement.If melanoma is suspected, further assessment and often a biopsy with microscopic examination by a pathologist are required for diagnosis.

What happens if FotoFinder identifies a changing mole?

Accepted Answer

A changing mole does not automatically mean cancer. Your doctor will assess the lesion, usually with dermoscopy, and consider the change alongside its appearance and your individual risk. Depending on the findings, the lesion may be monitored more closely or a biopsy or removal may be recommended.

Do I need a referral?

Accepted Answer

No. You do not need a GP referral to book FotoFinder mole mapping or a skin check with Northern Skin Doctors.

How long does a FotoFinder appointment take?

Accepted Answer

The total body photography component typically takes around 15 minutes. Your overall appointment may take longer if additional digital dermoscopy, consent, image review or clinical assessment is required.

Where is FotoFinder available?

Accepted Answer

FotoFinder total body photography is available at our Smithfield clinic at 2/2–6 Cumberland Avenue, Smithfield, Cairns. Patients seen through our Port Douglas clinic can be referred to Smithfield when additional imaging technology is required.
